Destination Senior Shoots: Behind The Scenes

Senior portraits have evolved far beyond local parks and familiar downtown streets. Today’s seniors are looking for experiences that feel unique, personal, and memorable. That’s where destination senior shoots come in.

Whether it’s Las Vegas, Nashville, Chicago, New York City, or a scenic beach town, destination senior shoots give students the opportunity to create images that stand out from everyone else’s. The best part? Offering destination sessions may be easier than you think.

Recently, we traveled to Las Vegas with a high school senior from Illinois for a destination senior session. It was a perfect example of how photographers can create incredible experiences while helping clients capture something completely different from what they could get at home.

How Destination Senior Shoots Work

One of the biggest misconceptions photographers have is that clients won’t pay to travel for senior portraits. In reality, many families are excited about the opportunity.

The key is keeping the process simple.

Instead of charging extra photography fees, photographers can offer destination sessions at their standard portrait rates. Families simply cover their own travel expenses and meet the photographer at the chosen location.

By announcing upcoming travel dates and offering a limited number of spots, photographers can create excitement and urgency around these sessions.

For example:

    • “I’ll be in Las Vegas March 5-7.”
    • “Only three destination senior shoot spots available.”
    • “Book your session and meet me there.”

This approach turns a regular senior session into a unique experience without adding unnecessary complexity.

Starting Small Before Going Big

If you’re a photographer considering destination senior shoots, you don’t need to start with cross-country travel.

Begin with cities that are within driving distance of your home base.

For photographers in the Midwest, that might mean:

  • Chicago
  • Nashville
  • Memphis
  • Kansas City

These nearby destinations provide completely different backgrounds and visual styles while keeping travel costs manageable.

As demand grows, you can expand to larger destinations, conferences, vacation spots, or even international locations.

Behind the Scenes of a Destination Senior Session

One of the most rewarding aspects of destination senior shoots is the creative variety they offer.

During our Las Vegas session, every corner seemed to provide a new backdrop. From colorful walls and urban textures to dramatic desert landscapes, the city gave us endless opportunities to create a diverse gallery of images.

A big part of the process is staying flexible and exploring your surroundings. Some of the strongest locations aren’t planned in advance. They are discovered while walking between shooting spots.

That’s one of the most valuable behind the scenes lessons photographers can learn. Keep your eyes open. Great locations are often hiding in plain sight.

Throughout the session, we focused on creating variety through different outfits, posing styles, and environments. The goal wasn’t just to create beautiful portraits. It was to tell a story about the senior’s personality and create images that felt authentic to her.

Why Families Love Destination Senior Shoots

Destination senior shoots offer more than just photos. They create memories.

For many families, the trip becomes part of the senior year experience. Parents get to spend quality time with their student while celebrating a major milestone before graduation.

The resulting images often feel more meaningful because they are connected to a shared adventure rather than a standard portrait appointment.

Families also appreciate having portraits that look different from what everyone else in their school is posting.

Final Thoughts

Destination senior shoots are one of the best ways to elevate your photography experience and offer something truly unique to your clients.

You don’t need a huge travel budget or a complicated business model to get started. Begin with nearby cities, announce your travel schedule, and offer a limited number of sessions.

Most importantly, remember that people are looking for experiences. The photographs are important, but the memories created along the way are what make destination senior shoots so special.

If you’ve been thinking about taking your senior photography outside your hometown, this is your sign to start planning your first destination session.
